Hallo X-Gemeinde !!!

Subject: Re: X 1/9 Brake MC replacement
Hi James,
this is funny. Just replaced the brake MC YESTERDAY (o.k. it was
Sunday, but my wife was out of town ...
). It took me about 6 hours
since I thought I would have to remove the clutch cylinder, too. But
this is NOT true. You don't have to touch the clutch hydraulic system
(well, the fluid was very old so it did not hurt).
Here are my recommended steps:
1) Remove the Steering column (total of 5 screws so this doesn't hurt)
All electrical lines have plugs for easy disconnecting
2) Loosen the brake liquid container on the right side of your X1/9
3) Step 2) gives you some additional space for the two hoses running
from the container to the master cylinder. (There was some small
cover behind the washer liquid container which I removed also)
4) Remove the two remaining nuts holding the brake/clutch pedal
assembly.
5) Step 4) gives you enough space to remove the two, long 8mm screws
holding the brake and clutch cylinder. You are right, the bolts
wouldn't come out because of the heater box.
6) Because of step 2) you pedal assembly drops far enough to allow
access to the brake line mountings.
7) I detached the hoses coming from the brake fluid container but you
could keep them on since you have to pull the plastic sockets anyway.
Finally my MC is great, but today I detected one drop of brake fluid
on my carpet. Since yesterday I initially forgot to fix one brake line
mount I hope the drop still comes from there (it got really late
...). Let's see until I get home from my office today.
Oh, I totally disassembled the pedal assembly and had the plastic
bearing cleaned. After that my brake pedal would go to zero position
without the help of the master cylinder's spring. Maybe you want to
check this, too.
